Description
Myriophyllum mattogrossense, commonly known as Mato Grosso Milfoil, is a popular aquarium plant cherished for its delicate, feathery appearance. Native to the wetlands of South America, this fast-growing stem plant adds a lush, vibrant green texture to any aquascape. Under strong lighting, its foliage can develop beautiful reddish to bronze hues. It’s relatively easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for both newcomers and seasoned aquarists looking to create a dense, bushy background.
Care
This species thrives in medium to high lighting. For optimal growth, vibrant coloration, and a compact form, CO2 injection is recommended, though not strictly necessary. It is a nutrient-hungry plant, so regular liquid fertilization is beneficial. Pay attention to both macronutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) and micronutrients, as whitening of the shoot tips can indicate an iron deficiency. It is adaptable to a wide range of water parameters.

Propagation
Propagation is very straightforward. Simply take cuttings from healthy, mature stems and replant them directly into the substrate. The cuttings will readily develop roots and grow into new, independent plants, allowing for easy and rapid multiplication. We advise having at least three nodes on each cutting, and plant one of the nodes straight into the gravel. The nodes where the leaves come out are where roots generally come out from.
Trimming
Regular trimming is encouraged to promote bushier, more compact growth and prevent the lower parts of the stems from becoming leggy or losing their leaves. The trimmed tops can be replanted to create a denser stand.
