Description

The hornwort is a staple for many aquarium enthusiasts. This fast-growing plant is non-demanding and absorbs excess nutrients from your tank. It also provides a great home and hiding spots for small critters like shrimp.

Care

Hornwort is an undemanding plant that thrives in a wide range of conditions. It prefers medium light to prevent its needles from shedding but tolerates both low and high light levels. It does not require CO2 injection and absorbs nutrients directly from the water column, making liquid fertilizers beneficial, especially in heavily planted tanks. Keep temperatures between 10-30°C (50-85°F) and a pH of 6.0-7.5. It can be left floating or loosely anchored in the substrate.

Propagation

Propagating Hornwort is incredibly simple. Just trim any section of the main stem or side shoots, ensuring the cutting is at least a few inches long. These cuttings can be left to float in the aquarium and will quickly develop into new, independent plants without any special care.

Trimming

Regular trimming is necessary to control its rapid growth and prevent it from overtaking the aquarium and blocking light for other plants. Simply cut the stems to the desired length with aquarium scissors. The trimmed portions can be discarded or used for propagation.

• While it can be anchored in the substrate, the buried portion of the stem may rot over time.
• This plant can be brittle and may shed its needles, especially during initial acclimation or in low-light conditions. These shed needles can be a nuisance to clean up.
