Description

Hedyotis salzmannii, also known as Salzmann’s Bluetail, is a popular stem plant in the aquarium hobby, cherished for its vibrant green leaves and creeping growth. Native to South America, it’s a versatile choice for both beginners and seasoned aquascapers, capable of creating lush carpets in the foreground or midground of an aquarium. Its relatively easy care and moderate to fast growth make it a rewarding plant to cultivate.

Care

To thrive, Hedyotis salzmannii prefers medium to high lighting, which encourages compact and dense growth. While CO₂ injection is not mandatory, it significantly boosts its growth rate and vibrancy. Maintain a temperature between 20-28°C and a pH of 6.0-7.5. A nutrient-rich substrate, such as aquarium soil, is ideal, supplemented with regular liquid fertilizers containing micronutrients and iron to prevent deficiencies like yellowing leaves.

Propagation

Propagation is straightforward and is done by taking cuttings. Simply trim healthy stems from the mother plant and replant them directly into the substrate. These cuttings will readily develop roots and grow into new plants, helping to create a denser, bushier appearance.

Trimming

Regularly trim the plant to maintain its desired height of 10-15 cm and to encourage a bushier, more compact growth habit. Trimming the tops will promote lateral shoots, which is especially useful when trying to achieve a carpeting effect.

Notes, Tips, and Considerations

  • Tissue-cultured plants are an excellent choice to ensure you receive a specimen free from pests, algae, and snails.
  • While hardy, signs of nutrient deficiencies, such as yellowing leaves, should be addressed promptly with appropriate fertilization.
  • Its creeping growth habit is perfect for creating a carpeting effect in the foreground or midground.
