Description

Originating from Southeast Asia, Rotala rotundifolia ‘red’ is a striking stem plant highly prized in aquascaping for its potential to develop intense red hues. Found naturally in semi-emersed conditions along the edges of streams and marshes, this cultivated variant adapts well to submerged life in aquariums. Its bushy growth habit and vibrant color make it a favorite for adding pops of color to the midground or background.

Care

Requires moderate to high light and benefits significantly from CO2 injection and nutrient-rich substrate for best growth and coloration. Maintain stable parameters within the recommended ranges. Optimal red coloration is achieved with high light, moderate to high CO2, and a nutrient balance favouring low nitrates (<5ppm) with sufficient phosphates and iron.

Propagation

Easily propagated by taking stem cuttings. Simply snip a healthy section of stem and replant it in the substrate. Side shoots can also be removed and planted.

Trimming

Regular trimming encourages lateral branching, resulting in a bushier plant. Cut stems above a node; the cut piece can be replanted. If leaves are falling off on he lower portion of the stem, simply push the stem lower with some tweezers.
