Description
Micranthemum tweediei ‘Monte Carlo’ is a popular and versatile aquatic plant prized for its lush, green carpeting effect in freshwater aquariums. Native to Argentina, it’s found along the banks of rivers and streams. Its creeping stems with small, round leaves form a dense mat, making it ideal for foregrounds. Its relatively easy care and moderate to fast growth make it a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquascapers.
Care
Provide moderate to high lighting for compact, carpeting growth. While it can survive in low light, it may become leggy. CO2 injection is not required but will significantly boost growth rate and density. It benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate and regular liquid fertilization as it feeds from both its roots and the water column. Maintain a temperature between 20-28°C and a pH of 6.0-7.5. It is adaptable to a wide range of water hardness.
Propagation
Propagation is straightforward. Simply trim healthy stems and replant them into the substrate. The plant also spreads naturally by sending out runners that creep across the substrate, forming a dense carpet over time.
Trimming
Regularly trim the carpet to keep it low and compact. Trimming encourages horizontal growth and prevents the lower layers from being shaded out and dying off. The cuttings can be replanted to fill in sparse areas or propagate the plant.
Notes, Tips, and Considerations
- When planting tissue culture, rinse off the gel and separate the plant into small clumps. Plant these clumps a few centimeters apart to encourage spreading.
- It can also be used to create a cascading effect over rocks and driftwood.
