Description

Littorella uniflora, commonly known as Shoreweed, is a small, perennial aquatic plant with a distinct grass-like appearance. It forms rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves that spread via runners to create a dense carpet. Unlike other grass-like plants, the leaves are more firm and round. Native to temperate regions of Europe and North America, it thrives in shallow, soft waters of lakes and ponds. Its ability to grow both submersed and emersed makes it a versatile and popular choice for various aquatic setups.

Care

Easy to care for. For a dense, lawn-like carpet, provide moderate to high lighting; it tolerates low light, but leaves will grow longer. CO₂ supplementation is beneficial for more robust growth but not required, as it can absorb carbon from the substrate. Plant in a nutrient-rich substrate like sand or aquarium soil. Regular liquid fertilization will encourage healthier growth. Perform regular water changes to maintain water quality.

Propagation

Propagation is primarily achieved through the plant’s natural runners, which develop daughter plants. These can be allowed to spread on their own or can be separated and replanted to new locations. Dense rosettes can also be carefully divided and replanted.

Trimming

Due to its slow growth rate, trimming is minimal. Maintenance typically involves removing any dead leaves and managing the spread of runners if they grow into unwanted areas of the aquarium.

Notes, Tips, and Considerations

  • The leaves are somewhat brittle, so handle them with care during tank maintenance.
