Description
Hygrophila pinnatifida is an eye-catching aquatic plant from India, prized for its unique, fern-like leaves that can display beautiful shades of brown, red, and green. Native to the fast-flowing streams of the Western Ghats, it’s remarkably versatile in the aquarium. It can be planted as a midground bush, attached to rocks and wood like an epiphyte, or even allowed to grow emersed, where it might surprise you with small purple flowers. Its unique growth habit and striking appearance make it a favorite among aquascapers.
Care
This plant thrives under medium to high lighting to develop its signature vibrant red and brown hues. CO2 injection is highly recommended for robust growth and coloration. Regular fertilization with both macro and micronutrients is crucial; a potassium deficiency may manifest as small pinholes in older leaves. It is adaptable to a pH of 6.0-7.5 and a water hardness of 2-12 dGH.

Propagation
Propagation is straightforward. Simply trim healthy top shoots and replant them into the substrate, or separate the runners that the plant sends out. Roots will begin sprouting at the nodes of cut stems if in a healthy environment. These new plantlets can be planted or attached to hardscape to start new colonies.
Trimming
Regularly trim the top shoots to encourage bushier, more compact growth. The cut tops can be replanted. Runners can also be trimmed and removed if the plant is spreading too aggressively. After trimming, new shoots may come out of the lower sections.
Notes, Tips, and Considerations
- When grown emersed or partially exposed to air, this plant may produce small purple flowers.
- Pay close attention to potassium levels; pinholes in the leaves are a common sign of deficiency.
