Description

Eleocharis pusilla is a sought-after aquatic plant celebrated for its capacity to form lush, green carpets in freshwater aquariums. Although often distributed commercially under the name Eleocharis parvula, experts confirm the species typically found in the aquarium hobby is E. pusilla, originating from Australia and New Zealand. This has a slightly thicker leaf blade and typically grows only one or two leaves per node.

In its native environment, this perennial sedge flourishes in diverse wet and marshy areas, including lake and river margins, streams, marshes, and bogs. It thrives in shallow water over sandy or gravelly substrates and can adapt to fluctuating water levels, growing both submerged and emersed. Found in conditions from full sun to partial shade, it naturally forms dense mats that offer valuable habitat and shelter for small aquatic life.

Care

To successfully cultivate Eleocharis pusilla, provide medium to high light intensity to encourage dense growth and prevent legginess. A nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tab supplementation is crucial as this plant is a root feeder. Maintain water parameters within a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and a temperature range of 12-28°C. Soft to moderately hard water (0-14°dKH) is preferred. CO2 supplementation and regular fertilization are highly recommended for vigorous growth.

Propagation

The primary method of propagation for Eleocharis pusilla is through runners. The plant naturally spreads horizontally, producing new plantlets from these runners. These daughter plants can be gently separated and replanted to expand the carpet. Division of existing clumps is also effective. Propagation via seeds (bristly nuts) is possible in natural settings and controlled environments. Tissue culture is a common method for commercial production.

Trimming

Regular trimming is necessary to maintain the desired carpet density and shape. Trimming also encourages the plant to send out more runners, leading to a thicker carpet. Using sharp scissors to trim the blades every few weeks prevents the carpet from becoming too tall and shading itself or surrounding plants.

Notes, Tips, and Considerations
