Description

Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula) is a popular aquatic plant known for its fine, grass-like leaves that form a vibrant green carpet in the aquarium foreground or midground. Native to diverse moist and wet habitats across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, this plant is found in marshes, riversides, and shallow waters in both freshwater and brackish environments. Prized by aquarists for its ability to create a natural, lush floor, it spreads readily via runners and is a key plant for creating iwagumi or nature-style aquascapes. While adaptable, it performs best with moderate to high light and nutrient-rich conditions.

Care

Dwarf Hairgrass thrives in temperatures between 20-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, GH 3-12 dGH, and KH 2-6 dKH. Moderate to high lighting (at least 30 PPFD) is crucial for dense carpeting; low light can result in leggy growth. While not strictly necessary, CO2 injection greatly enhances growth and density. It is a nutrient-hungry plant and benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate and regular fertilization with liquid fertilizers and root tabs. Adequate water circulation helps prevent debris and algae accumulation.

Propagation

Propagation of Dwarf Hairgrass is primarily achieved through its natural production of horizontal runners from the root area, which develop into new plantlets. Aquarists commonly propagate it manually by dividing established clumps into smaller portions and replanting them. Tissue culture is also a frequent method used by commercial growers. While less common and more complex, propagation from seeds is possible, as is rooting cuttings taken from shoots.

Trimming

Regular trimming is recommended to maintain the desired carpet height and promote dense, horizontal growth. Use sharp scissors to trim the tops of the grass blades as needed. Trimming also improves light penetration and water circulation within the carpet, preventing dead spots and reducing algae risks. Remove any dead or decaying foliage during maintenance.
