Description

Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia), also known by a variety of charming names including Moneywort and Twopenny Grass, is a versatile and attractive plant that has found a home in both terrestrial gardens and aquatic landscapes. Native to Europe and Asia, this hardy perennial is a popular choice for aquarists seeking a vibrant splash of green that is relatively easy to care for. Its adaptability and attractive, coin-shaped leaves make it a welcome addition to a range of aquarium setups.

Care

Creeping Jenny is a forgiving plant, adaptable to a wide range of conditions. For optimal growth, provide moderate to high lighting and a nutrient-rich environment, although it can tolerate lower light levels. CO2 injection is not required but will promote faster, more robust growth. A balanced liquid fertilizer will ensure it receives all necessary nutrients. Plant stems directly into the substrate, like gravel or sand, where they will readily take root. It is best placed in the midground or background.

Propagation

Propagation is straightforward and can be done by simply taking stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem a few inches long and replant it into the substrate. The cutting will quickly develop roots and grow into a new plant.

Trimming

Regular trimming is necessary to prevent Creeping Jenny from becoming overgrown and shading out other plants. Its trailing growth can create a lovely cascading effect, but it should be pruned to maintain the desired shape and density. If the lower leaves begin to drop, it may be a sign that the plant is not receiving enough light at its base, which can be remedied by thinning out the upper growth.

Notes, Tips, and Considerations

  • A cultivar known as ‘Aurea’ or Golden Creeping Jenny offers a more golden-yellow hue to the leaves.
  • It is considered an invasive species in some areas, so care should be taken to not introduce it to local waterways.
  • It can provide good cover for fry and shrimp.
  • It is reportedly unpalatable to fish, making it a good choice for tanks where fish might otherwise nibble on plants.
