Description
Native to Southern South America, Bacopa australis, commonly known as Southern Bacopa, is a popular choice for both novice and experienced aquascapers. This stem plant is characterized by its small, round to oval-shaped, bright green leaves that grow in pairs along the stem, creating a dense, lush appearance. Under intense lighting, the leaves can develop a reddish or bronze tint. It’s highly adaptable and can be placed in the foreground, midground, or background, making it a versatile addition to any aquascape.
Care
Bacopa australis is very easy to care for, thriving in a wide range of water conditions. It tolerates temperatures from 18°C to 32°C, a pH of 6.0-7.9, and soft to moderately hard water (0-30 dGH). While it can grow in low light, medium to high lighting is recommended for more compact and lush growth. CO2 injection is not essential but will significantly enhance its growth and health. A nutrient-rich substrate is beneficial, and supplementing with liquid fertilizers will promote more robust growth and vibrant colors.
Propagation
Propagation is straightforward and is done through cuttings. Simply trim a healthy stem, at least a few inches long, and replant the cutting directly into the substrate. The cutting will readily develop roots and grow into a new plant. Regular trimming encourages the parent plant to become bushier.
Trimming
Due to its fast growth rate, regular pruning is required to maintain its desired shape and prevent it from overshadowing other plants. Trimming the top portions of the stems and replanting them is an effective way to propagate the plant and create a denser bush.
